The HARPS survey for southern extra-solar planets

چکیده
In this letter we present the discovery of a very light planetary companion to the star μAra (HD 160691). The planet orbits its host once every 9.5 days, and induces a sinusoidal radial velocity signal with a semi-amplitude of 4.1 m s, the smallest Doppler amplitude detected so far. These values imply a mass of m2 sin i=14 M⊕ (earth-masses). This detection represents the discovery of a planet with a mass slightly smaller than that of Uranus, the smallest “ice giant” in our Solar System. Whether this planet can be considered an ice giant or a super-earth planet is discussed in the context of the core-accretion and

The HARPS search for southern extra-solar planets
We present here the discovery and characterisation of a very light planet around HD 4308. The planet orbits its star in 15.56 days. The circular radial-velocity variation presents a tiny semi-amplitude of 4.1 ms−1 that corresponds to a planetary minimum mass m2 sin i= 14.1 M⊕ (Earth masses). The planet was unveiled by high-precision radial-velocity measurements obtained with the HARPS spectrogr...
متن کاملExtrasolar planets and brown dwarfs around A–F type stars ? VI. High precision RV survey of early type dwarfs with HARPS
Aims. Systematic surveys to search for exoplanets have been mostly dedicated to solar-type stars sofar. We developed in 2004 a method to extend such searches to earlier A–F type dwarfs and started spectroscopic surveys to search for planets and quantify the detection limit achievable when taking into account the stars properties (Spectral Type, v sin i) and their actual levels of intrinsic vari...
متن کاملThe CORALIE survey for Southern extra-solar planets
Activity related phenomena can induce radialvelocity variations, which can be very important when dealing with extra-solar planet search programmes requiring highprecision radial-velocity measurements. In this paper we present a new chromospheric activity index, SCOR, based on the Ca ii H line central reemission, and constructed using CORALIE spectra. After one year of measurements, values of S...
متن کاملThe CORALIE survey for southern extra-solar planets
Doppler measurements from the high-resolution CORALIE spectrometer of the stars HD 75289 and HD 130322 reveal 2 new extra-solar giant planets. They are the second and third planetary candidates discovered with CORALIE in less than 1 year, since its installation on the 1.2-m Euler Swiss telescope at La Silla. The minimum mass of the planet around HD 75289 (m2 sin i = 0.42 MJup) is the lightest f...
